Behind the Smile
Italy, March 2024 — A Turning Point
The title The Power of the Smile came to me while hiking along the Ligurian coast in Imperia, Italy, in the spring of 2024. I was several hours into a long walk — through sun, rain, and wind — and at major crossroads in my life.
In recent years, I had made a major life change. I had trained as an expert coach, studied near the Dalai Lama’s temple in India, and taken part in some of the world’s most renowned personal development events in the U.S.
I had left my career as Head of Communications in the Danish government and was exploring life as an independent.
I was burned out
Years of toxic work environments had drained me. And the constant pressure to market and sell me as a self-employed professional? It wore me down. I was tired of always having to convince clients, collaborators — and myself — that I was worth something.
Then came the fire. A devastating blaze destroyed all my belongings. I was left with nothing. So I left. For Italy. For an extended yoga and writing retreat. To find myself again — and finally write the book that had been waiting to be written.
Born from Real Life
In the middle of it all, I completed a coaching program for 110 staff members across two large care homes. And something surprising happened: 88% reported a possible significant improvement in their work life — after using just a few simple tools.
This became the foundation of my book — a reflection of everything I had seen and learned as a senior coach. My book is deeply personal, rooted in real life, built on solid professional ground, and backed by tangible, real-world results.
Just as I returned home to promote the book and launch new programs, my body collapsed. My heart failed. I fractured my skull. I experienced a brain hemorrhage and significant concussion. I came dangerously close to dying.
Yoga as my parachute
Yoga became my parachute. It opened my eyes to the timeless wisdom of the East — wisdom that brought me back to life, stronger and more whole. I started seeing my life — and my work — in a whole new light.
I believe something essential happens when East meets West. And it is something we, in the modern Western world, are in desperate need of.
The truth is, far too many people today are struggling with their well-being in modern work and life. Stress, overload, and constant demands leave many of us ungrounded.
The latest insights from coaching and psychology meet the mysteries of Eastern traditions in surprising and powerful ways.
This is what I dedicate my work life to exploring.
A New Chapter
I have decided to redesign my professional life. In September 2025, I launch my new two-year lifeproject “New Ways to Break the Paradox of Modern Happiness” – where I invite to Conversations that Matter:
What if we brought even a spark of the timeless wisdom of the East into our lives, our work, and our culture — to confront stress and burnout, and inspire the courage to choose differently and create real change?
Shake the dust
Here is the truth: We talk — and we talk. People in countries like Denmark have never lived under better conditions in all of human history. And still, more and more of us are struggling.
We form committees, launch reforms, and invest billions in workplace wellbeing. And yet – stress, burnout, and loneliness keep rising. It is time to shake the dust. To pause. To feel. To reconnect. So, the question is:
What can you do – for youself?
Because systems, experts, and politicians will not fix this for you.
Real change does not start at the top. It starts between you and me. With the courage to be a little revolutionary. To take responsibility for your own wellbeing. To make sure you are more than just okay. In your life. In your work.
To use the power of your smile
